Margaret
Kenna
is Emeritus Professor of Social Anthropology at Swansea University. She
has carried out fieldwork for over forty years with the islanders and
migrants of Anafi, particularly on the topics of kinship, inheritance
and ritual, and also migration and tourism. She is both an honorary
member of the Anafiot Migrants Association and an honorary citizen of
the island and has published many articles about her research on the
island and among the migrant community. Her book, Greek Island Life: Fieldwork on Anafi'(2001, now out of
print), records in detail her original fieldwork in the 1960s, but the final
chapters bring the material up to date. She has also investigated the lives of
the political dissidents who were exiled to the island in the 1930s, through
detailed examination of an archive of glass negatives, and handwritten
newspapers produced by their commune. A book about the Anafi exiles, The
Social Organization of Exile, 2001, has been translated into Greek and
published by Ekdoseis Alexandreia, 2004.
